Benedita Sampaio-Maia is an Assistant Professor in the Faculty of Dental Medicine at the University of Porto and a Researcher in the Nephrology & Infectious Diseases group in i3S – Institute for Research & Innovation in Health. She obtained a Bachelor’s in Microbiology by the School of Biotechnology at the Portuguese Catholic University and a PhD in Human Biology by the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Porto. She has (co)authored around 60 scientific papers, 7 book chapters and has over 800 citations in Publons (WoS). Currently, Benedita is interested in the study of the human microbiome in health and disease.

Fernando Barbosa

Fernando Barbosa is an Associate Professor in the Faculty of Psychology and Educational Sciences at the University of Porto, Director of the Psychology Department and Coordinator of the Neuropsychophysiology laboratory of the University of Porto. He obtained a Bachelor’s in Psychology by the Faculty of Psychology and Educational Sciences at the University of Porto and a PhD in Biomedical Sciences, Neurosciences branch, by the School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences at the University of Porto. He has (co)authored around 150 scientific papers, 2 books and has over 1100 citations in Publons (WoS). Currently, Fernando is interested in the study of psychopathy and anti-social behaviour.

Philip Burnet

PhD in Biochemistry

Philip Burnet is an Associate Professor in the University of Oxford and is Head of the Neurobiology and Experimental Therapeutics group. He obtained a Bachelor’s (Honours) in Biochemistry by Hull University, a Master’s in Neurochemistry by King’s College and a PhD in Biochemistry by the Imperial College. He has (co)authored over 100 scientific papers, several book chapters and has over 1000. Currently, Philip Burnet is interested in the study of the role of the microbiome and the gut-brain axis in mental illness.

Carolina Costa

Bachelor’s (First-class with Honours) in Microbiology

Master’s (Distinction) in Applied Microbiology

PhD student

Carolina Costa received a First-Class Honours in Microbiology and a Master’s with distinction in Applied Microbiology by the School of Biotechnology at the Portuguese Catholic University. She then became an invited Teaching Assistant and a scholarship researcher at the same university. In 2020, she was awarded a grant for her PhD by the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT). She enrolled in the doctoral programme in Biomedical Sciences by the School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences at the University of Porto and is doing her thesis at i3S, Faculty of Psychology and Educational Sciences at the University of Porto and University of Oxford.
